Environmental scandals: when there is strength in numbers
Three years after our Green Blood investigation, which revealed serious environmental damage caused by mining companies, Forbidden Stories received a leak from a collective of hackers. The documents came from the local subsidiary of mining conglomerate Solway Group, which we investigated in Green Blood.
With 65 journalists, we discovered how journalists who reported on the mine were systematically profiled, surveilled and even followed by drones. The data leak also shows us the company’s efforts to avoid responsibility, despite abuses against the press and risks to the environment.
The “Mining Secrets” investigation pursues the work of Guatemalan journalist Carlos Choc.
